How We Work
The authoritative voice of the rental vehicle industry in New Zealand
The Rental Vehicle Association is the industry body for New Zealand operators who hire or lease passenger vehicles, EVs, hybrids, SUVs, minibuses, vans, coaches, trucks, campervans and motorcycles.
Incorporated in 1939, we advocate for members, help them stay on top of the rules that affect this industry, and work with government and industry partners so travellers have safe, straightforward journeys.
This page explains how we work day to day: the advocacy we do, how complaints are handled, and how to reach us. Members are bound by our Code of Conduct.
Advocacy
We represent members with the people and agencies that shape this industry. That includes political parties, government agencies, and industry groups.
We sit on working groups and forums that affect rental operators. Current focus includes visiting-driver safety, responsible camping, and tourism.

Complaints Resolution
If you have a concern about a rental vehicle operator, contact them first. A phone call or email often sorts it out.
The Rental Vehicle Association is an advocacy body. We do not adjudicate complaints between customers and members. We can forward your complaint to the member if you send the details below.
What to include:
- The name of the rental vehicle operator
- Copies of any letters or documents
- What happened, including dates and names
- What you would like the operator to do, that is fair to both sides
Email complaints to accounts@rentalvehicle.co.nz.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Rental Vehicle Association do?
We represent NZ rental operators with government and industry, help members with the rules that apply to this sector, and promote safe, straightforward travel for customers.
How do I complain about an RVA member?
Contact the operator first. If you still want it passed on, email accounts@rentalvehicle.co.nz with the operator’s name, what happened, and what you would like done. We forward it to the member. We do not decide the outcome.
Does the RVA investigate rental complaints?
No. We are not a disputes body. Independent options include the Commerce Commission, Citizens Advice Bureau, and the Disputes Tribunal.
