Drive Safe Code of Practice

Rental Vehicle Operators – Informing Overseas Drivers

How This Code Works

This Code is not a legal mandate. Signing up means meeting every Required Standard in the document, and attending to Excellent Practice items where possible. Operators must sign off annually on a self-certification checklist, confirming every Required Standard is genuinely deployed in their business. Operators are also expected to meet all legal requirements for visiting drivers, including holding a rental service licence, checking and validating overseas driver licences, and ensuring non-English licences are accompanied by an Approved Translation.

About Drive Safe

In phase two, RVA and TIA will look more closely at how DriveSafe can better align with Tiaki and its “Drive Carefully” pillar, strengthening the link between visitor safety and responsible travel. The Code was formally endorsed on 18 September 2026 by Caddie Kerr, President, Rental Vehicle Association, and Rebecca Ingram, Chief Executive Officer, Tourism Industry Aotearoa.
